DESCRIPTION:An initiative and invitation by parishioner Elaine Chatwin:\nOn
August 6\, 1945\, the USA dropped the atomic bomb “Litle Boy” on Hiro
shima\, Japan\, killing people either instantly or over the months that fo
llowed due to injuries and radiation sickness. On August 9\, 1945\, the at
omic bomb “Fat Man” was dropped on the city of Nagasaki. Most of the 1
50\,000 to 246\,000 men\, women and children who died in the bombings were
civilians. The survivors of these attacks are called hibakusha (atomic bo
mb survivors) and are still suffering with long-term health\, psychologica
l and social consequences.\nThe sanctuary at St. Dunstan’s will be open
from 9:30 to 11:00am Sunday\, August 9th where Elaine Chatwin will be hold
ing vigil. All are welcome to stop by for a few minutes or longer to pray\
, sit in silence and light candles to honour the casualties and hibakusha
of the 1945 bombings. This quiet time will also honour all those who are s
upporting and\nworking toward global efforts to abolish nuclear weapons.
