An initiative and invitation by parishioner Elaine Chatwin:
On August 6, 1945, the USA dropped the atomic bomb “Litle Boy” on Hiroshima, Japan, killing people either instantly or over the months that followed due to injuries and radiation sickness. On August 9, 1945, the atomic bomb “Fat Man” was dropped on the city of Nagasaki. Most of the 150,000 to 246,000 men, women and children who died in the bombings were civilians. The survivors of these attacks are called hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) and are still suffering with long-term health, psychological and social consequences.
The sanctuary at St. Dunstan’s will be open from 9:30 to 11:00am Sunday, August 9th where Elaine Chatwin will be holding vigil. All are welcome to stop by for a few minutes or longer to pray, sit in silence and light candles to honour the casualties and hibakusha of the 1945 bombings. This quiet time will also honour all those who are supporting and
working toward global efforts to abolish nuclear weapons.
