In the stewardship handbook "The S Word", Archbishop Douglas Hambidge talks about the sacramental nature of money, that
beneath its outward appearance there is a deeply significant spiritual meaning. It announces who I am and what my priorities are. It expresses what I do with my time and energies between my acts of worship and other spiritual exercises... I am not giving because the Church needs money [the church does!]... I give in this way because I have a need to give, and because merely singing songs and saying prayers is not enough... The money we give, in addition to announcing who we are, also declares who God is in our lives. It says, “This is who I am, and this who you are to me.”
Since my (the Rector’s) first job as a junior accountant, I have adopted the spiritual practice of proportional giving. Over the years, my life had its ups & downs, and this practice became a way for me to learn to trust God deeper and experience the ever-faithfulness of God.
This season, Parish Council is encouraging you to prayerfully consider proportional giving if that is not already your practice. You may start with any percentage you are able to commit to, whether it is 0.5%, 3% or 50%. Each year, you may consider challenging yourself just to give a bit more if circumstances permit.
