This morning we listen to the story of the ancient Hebrew people’s return to their homeland after years of exile. Their return is marked by both joy and sadness. Joy because they are home again; sadness because home is not how they remembered it. They have come home to find ruins and must begin the work or reconstruction. At this point of joy mixed with sadness the ancient texts of their ancestors, the word of the Lord, is read and the people are cut to the heart.

On our spiritual journey we often feel the longing and pull to return to a moment when we felt at home, safe and stable. But when we return to the old place to rediscover our past joy, we find ruins. These are the times to listen to the ancient words of life and discover that God can help us rebuild what was lost and find new places of joy, safety and stability. We only need to keep our ears open to listen for the possibility.

Service of Holy Communion - all are welcome!
