Facilitator: Linda Conroy
Two years before his death, Francis of Assisi wrote the Canticle of Creatures. This glorious poem/prayer of praise rose from his embodied knowing and mystical “seeing” the oneness of all creation. Francis’ experiences led to him name the sun, wind, fire as our brothers and the moon, stars, water as our sisters with the Earth being “Sister Mother Earth”.
Together we will explore how the “Canticle of Creatures," written in 1224, offers us here and now in 2021 a way to reflect on Francis’ prayer which may be prayed today in a way that both energizes us in our praise for the Creator as well as deepens our sense of connection to all of creation. It also challenges us to be disturbed by how our “brothers” and “sister” are suffering. Can this prayer help us to hear the “Cry of the Earth”?
Linda Conroy is a retreat facilitator, spiritual director, and the founder of Stillpoint at Beckside Spirituality Center in Bellingham, WA. (stillpointatbeckside.com) Her Masters thesis, which was published in “Maria A Journal of Marian Studies”, focused on Mary in the lives and writings of Francis and Clare of Assisi. She finds Francis’ way of “seeing” our deep relational connection to creation very life giving.
